Gout happens when your body produces too much uric acid, and/or when your kidneys struggle to flush it out properly. This leads to a buildup of urate crystals, which can collect in your joints, causing inflammation and intense pain.

The big toe is a common target, but gout can affect other joints too. This can include joints in your hands and feet.
